Stealth Outdoor Lighting helps welcome
members to Gilda's clubhouse
Royal Oak, Mich. –Gilda’s Club Metro Detroit hosts an average of
120 program activities each month at its 9,500-square-foot clubhouse.
Thanks to a donation from Stealth Outdoor Lighting, the exterior of the
clubhouse offers a welcoming and safe environment for members
coming and going from the cancer support community.
“Our clubhouse is a vital part of the warm, welcoming environment
that Gilda’s Club provides to people touched by cancer,” said Heather
Hall, executive director at Gilda’s Club. The nonprofit organization
welcomed 12,000 visits to the clubhouse in 2010. “Stealth Lighting
System’s donation of exterior lights helps ensure our members feel
welcome and safe when at program activities. We’re incredibly grateful
for the support from Ron and his crew.”
Ron Witherspoon, owner of Livonia-based Stealth Outdoor Lighting,
originally donated and installed the exterior fixtures and system in 2006
after his mother was diagnosed with cancer and found support at Gilda’
s Club. When Kerrie Kaminski, a close high school classmate and
Gilda’s Club member, died from brain cancer this past July,
Witherspoon decided to donate his services to Gilda’s Club again.
He replaced several fixtures, timers and bulbs in the existing system,
and also added light fixtures in the garden area.
“I was just so moved by Kerrie’s funeral that I knew I had to do
something to honor her,” said Witherspoon. “Kerrie was about my age
(42) and that’s a terribly young age to go through cancer and die. Both
my mom and Kerrie found support at Gilda’s Club during their cancer
treatment so it made sense to give back to the organization that makes
a positive impact on people affected by cancer.”
Witherspoon would like to donate his services to Gilda’s Club
affiliates across the country. He will travel to Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids
in early September to conduct a needs assessment of their outdoor
lighting. Witherspoon estimates that renovation costs will range from
$6,000-$8,000 per location, depending on the amount of work needed.
